Default Do they help?

Do books about poker really take the place of actually playing the game for years?

I hear friends talking about reading a book as if they are ready to make their way to the high stakes tables in Vegas, without having sat at even the most basic, rec-room game first!

I don't think they can replace years and years of experience but they can definitely help to bulk out your skills. Experience coupled with some strategy guidance is probably the best combination.

I believe that poker books and softwares really help improve your play no matter what is the level of your experience. Theory and practice go hand in hand.

I feel that books can never take place of a good mentor. If you know someone who's a pro at playing the game, ask the person for a few tips and advice. They will be invaluable. Forums like these too are a good bet where a lot of players are willing to share their experiences.

Forums are definitely a great educational source. It's a good way to read casually on strategy and personal experiences but I'd agree that playing frequently with a seasoned mentor is probably the best way to get really good.

All are good options.. Of course, playing is great exercise of your lessons. Perhaps a great option is to play the free games/tables, whilst you are learning.

It has been recommended in almost every book i've read as a great way to get started without losing money, etc.
