Poker play is just like any card game where luck plays a chance. But you don’t have to always rely on luck to win a game. It does take a certain amount of quick thinking and knowing your chances of making that win. Know your cards and see what good combinations you can come up with and try to guess how your other opponents around the table would fare in comparison.

Now, playing all-in is a common occurrence in any poker game. What this means is that you play your chips against other players in the hope of getting the pot money that could double or increase your chips more than twice what its original value was. However, this type of call will only succeed provided certain conditions are met.

Chips, Bluffs and Bets

For starters, you have to have a comparatively higher chip stack than your opponents plus a good hand to make an all-in bet. Say you’re low on chips and you try making an all-in bet. An opponent who can afford to gamble a share of his chips will most likely make your call and gobble up all of your chips. That’s the end of the game for you.

However, if you have fewer chips to bet but you have an unbeatable hand sitting in front of you, you can then up your chips with an all-in. This is the only time you are advised to move ahead with an all-in despite being short on chip stack. Try to remember that. Otherwise, you’re out of the poker tournament. This goes without saying that you can’t call a bluff when you’re low on chips and none of your opponents would give so much as a blink with your bluff.

Given that condition, it does not necessarily mean that you would have to always stay on the safe side and just wait it out until you get a hold of the nuts. You’re setting yourself up for failure because by then your opponents would just fold against your all-in. Based on your past calls and bets, they could already read your cards just as if you put them all in front of their faces.

If the tables are turned and you have the upper hand when it comes to the chip stack, then you have more room to play around and call the bluffs. You can go aggressive and force your opponents to fold. You may lose a few chips there but if you’re good enough, you will find that your opponents tend to lose more because they have more to lose than you do.

Some good advice. A lot of people I know, albeit it tends to be individuals who are not that good at poker, constantly tell me that poker is all about luck, but I don't think it is. A small percentage is of course luck because you are dealt a random hand at the beginning of each game. However, as you said, it requires a lot of skills from each player. If the majority of poker was luck then more people would be experts it. However, you can definitely tell the difference between those who are ok at poker, and those who have practised or nigh on 5 years.

Counting cards is an essential in poker and knowing odds is important as well, but you will know when u graduate to the next level when you can start to get a better read on every individual. Amarillo Slim once said something to the effect of to look around your table and if there is no sucker there than the sucker is you. Rude saying but so profound.

It is true! Harder in online, but I find if I hang out on a table for at least 20-30 mins, I'll get a feel for the players.. I'll add my comments whether he folds quick, etc. I'll get a decent feel for the other players fairly quickly.

True, you can start to pick up some patterns and the great advantage with playing online poker or online texas holdem poker is that you can basically see patterns much better without letting the professional player pysche you out emotionally. With online poker is much more math and card counting.
