FROM LOSER TO WINNER

If you admit to being a loser when it comes to playing poker that should be a good place to start.  So you got a problem wining at tables.  Now that you acknowledged that you can now start analyzing why that may be the case.  They call it root-cause analysis.  If you start thinking along those lines, you can now start figuring out how to counteract those causes so that you can improve your game.  It can be external, internal or a combination of both.  Let’s get down to details.

External Factors

Have you ever had time to check out the poker sites you go to?  Are the opponents’ skill levels a tad higher than yours so that you feel like a beginner when playing against them?  You should start checking out reviews of particular poker rooms.  If you’re up to it, you could also start asking questions in forums to get direct answers.

It’s time to start learning the steps to getting more out of bonus and incentive schemes an online poker site might offer.  Will that making you a winning poker player?  Not exactly but it would be helpful when bankrolling your games at tournaments.

Internal Factors

Poker is a matter of focusing on the game at hand.  If you’re not disciplined enough to play the game from start to finish, you will most likely lose when you’re least concentrated on the game.  When you play poker, you should be physically and mentally prepared to take on your opponents.  Playing when your mind is halfway someplace else will spell your doom.

It’s good to have good financial management skills so you could be there playing long term.  A fool proof way of bankrolling your games would be to follow 1:20 rule of risking your chips for cash games and 1:50 rule when you’re playing tournaments.  This is not a drastic rule, really.  But if you’ve been there long enough to see how the game is played, you’d agree that this should keep you playing longer than the next person who risks more.

And you wouldn’t go this far in the article if you haven’t realized that part of turning around your losing streak is to keep gaining more knowledge about the game.  You should not confine yourself to your personal experience and learning but you could expand to knowing from your opponents and other players.  Each good player has a good piece of advice to share so be there when he’s ready to spill the beans or at least watch and learn.
