In Poker, What Works for John May Not Work for Peter

Poker tips for beginners are a great way to learn the game rules, strategies and other advice that poker pros unsparingly provides.  They make for a convenient template which you can follow in your poker games and a convenient yardstick against which you can measure your poker playing skills.  However, some poker beginners actually get so wrapped up in poker playing tips for beginners that they get trapped; such players are doomed to remain in the beginner level and will forever be easy prey to poker predators.

Be Guided

As a poker newbie, you’d do well to learn the rules of poker from a textbook or from a comprehensive poker information site.  Read all about poker strategies from the articles and content submitted by professional poker players and analysts.  These materials would be a great help to beginners since they’d let you get acquainted with poker rules, etiquette and basic poker strategy – thus you’d have enough confidence to try your luck in money games or beginner poker tournaments.

Information from books and poker pros are there to guide you when you are just setting out in the world of poker.  They are great levelers since they’d let you in on poker gaming strategies that only experienced players actually know.  Thus, you’d at least not fare so poorly when in a table with relatively experienced poker players.

Do Not Be Trapped

Unfortunately, some beginners do not look at poker tips and advice for beginners as a mere guide to poker.  Some people actually make these tips and advice their bible to poker.  Given any specific playing situation, players who are heavily reliant on poker tips and advice would immediately think about what Daniel Negreanu or Phil Ivey would do if he were the one playing.

This attitude is indicative of a beginner who has been fully trapped by the beginner-tips reliance syndrome.  They are actually basing all of their decisions on what the article they have read says or what their favorite pro has advised in one of his columns, articles or blog posts.  These poker players do not make a move without bookish or historical basis.  These poker players, in short, refuse to think for themselves; as such, they’d forever be poker beginners and never experts.

Innovate and Create

There comes a point in any poker player’s life when he should begin thinking for himself and not continue relying on the ‘experts’ say-so.  If you don’t move on, you’d be benefiting with a few wins here and there but you’d never be truly great.  Experts have become such because they stuck to the only poker advice worth keeping:  think before you act and think for yourself.
