Make Your Own Luck in Poker Like any other card games, poker is still governed by luck. But unlike other card games you could never win poker games and tournaments by sheer luck. It requires a tremendous amount of skill to be a good poker player. Famous poker players win tournaments not because they are lucky all the time but because they have acquired the skill to master the game. To be a master of poker needs a lot of practice and cunning. This could not be developed overnight. Learning the game though is not hard at all. The concept behind the game is pretty easy to understand that even a grade schooler could learn it. But playing and winning are two different things. Know the Game Before you could be a master you must start at being the learner. There are actually a lot of types of poker games. Each poker game has different rules that you need to know about. But the major process behind each game is just the same. You will be usually dealt two cards in the beginning of a power game then you will be asked to wager after seeing your first cards. You will then need to create a five-card combination based on these two cards. The other three cards will be provided to you depending on the type of poker game that you are playing. Your objective in a poker game is to beat your opponents’ hand or to have them fold. To fold means to give up on your hand without betting on it. A raise is made if a player increases the bet of the previous player. To call is to go on with the previous bet. You could also call for a check which means that you would like to pass your turn without betting on your hand to see if the next player bets. You need to call or fold if the player places a bet though. All bets are accumulated on what is called a pot. The pot is composed of an initial wager which all participants must place then gradually increased by succeeding bets. Develop the Skills There are skills necessary for you to be good at poker. You must be observant and must be able to know an opponent’s strengths and weaknesses. A good poker player could decipher facial expressions and mannerisms of other players. A little knowledge in psychology might also help. You also need to have a good mathematical sense to be good in poker. Decisions in a poker game are mostly done through probability and percentage. Both of these are necessary for you to be able to calculate the odds well. |
