Playing Five-Card Stud Poker As a beginner, it would be to your benefit to learn as many poker variants as you can. It makes sense, then, to learn about five-card stud poker. After all, this poker variant may be your niche in poker gaming. Pretty much the same skills are needed in five-card stud poker as in other poker variants. A five-card stud poker player needs to be an effective bluffer, he needs to have strategy and, of course, he also needs a lot of common sense. However, five-card stud poker is played rather differently from the famous poker variants. Stage One To start with, the dealer would distribute the first round of cards, beginning from the player to his left. Each player at the table would be given one card face down. After that, the dealer would again distribute one card each for every player but, this time, the card would be face-up. After each player has been dealt his face-up card, betting would begin. The player who would begin the betting round would be the player who has a face-up card with the lowest value (suit matters in cases where two players have a card with the same face value) if there’s a bring-in. If a bring-in is not required, then the player who has the highest card will bet or check. If there is more than one player with the highest value (suit cannot break the tie) the first player (among the tied players) to the dealer’s left has the option of betting or checking. Stage Two After the first betting round, the dealer would discard the top card on the deck and proceed to distribute another face-up card to each player. At this point, the player with the highest face-up card combination (e.g. AA) will bet or check. After the second betting round, the same mechanics would apply to the third and fourth betting rounds. The dealer will burn a card, distribute another face-up card to each player then the player with the highest hand so far would open the betting or would check. The betting round will continue to the third stage – the showdown – unless only one player remains and everybody else has folded. Stage Three When two or more players remain after the last betting round, the last player who has raised the bet would have to show his cards; he will be followed by the other players (the player who closed the last betting round can muck his cards). As with other poker variants, the one with the best five-card combination wins the pot. |
