Playing for the Pot

There are a number of people who considers poker as a job. For some it is a business. And for the majority it is just a game. But if you consider it thoroughly, the game of poker is not that far from an investment. You invest on your hand and get something in return.

A good businessman always considers his Return of Investment. In a real business setting, a good ROI is measure by how long it takes or you to achieve it. In poker a good ROI could be calculated by the number of times you bet has earned its amount. This consideration is on of the factors that a good poker player considers.

Pot Odds

There are a lot of factors that you need to consider before arriving to a conclusion in a poker game. As a matter of fact there are too much of them to consider in a single game. It is an excellent ability for a poker player to be able to make use of the right considerations depending on a certain scenario.

Pot odds is a calculation where a poker player calculates his ROI. But rather than the time variable a poker calculates the amount that he would earn in placing a single bet. The calculation behind pot odds is fairly easy to understand. Pot odds is basically the number of bets you earn or win by placing one bet.

The simplest example is this; you are playing Texas Hold'Em with five other players. You are at the button position. The small blind bets on the pre-flop all other players calls the bet. When it comes your turn your pot odds is 5:1. Meaning you win five bets for a single bet you make if you get the pot.

Using Pot Odds to your Advantage

Pot odds, like your position, your hand's strength and reading your opponent, is a relevant factor when playing poker. If you want to be an excellent player you should be able to make use of this to improve your game. Pot odds could not only be used to secure huge winnings but also to minimize your losses. Combined with the ability to play your cards right pot odds could easily be the most important factor in winning poker games.

The general rule is not to gamble when your pot odds are not that big, especially when you possess marginal hands. But once you have your hands on good cards and nuts always make sure that you increase your pot odds as high as you can.
