Playing From the Blind

Not much poker literature is devoted to blind bidding because there’s no exact formula or strategy for it.  Blind bidding is anchored on two simple inescapable poker facts: that you maybe bidding on a hand you will fold given another situation; and you will lose money in the process.  A seasoned player, however, knows the value of blind bidding and the importance of understanding the playing from the blind.

The Blind

The blind is short of saying “Well, Robert, now’s your time to lose some money.” Blinds are inevitable as it is crucial in poker games. Without it, poker would never be as exciting.  You would find more fun if you just throw cards all over the place than to play poker games without blinds.  The point is, while blinds are inevitable, one can profit from blinds provided that players gain and maintain adequate knowledge of what blinds are and how it defines the terrain of any poker game.  This single point can draw the line between bad players and exceptional ones.

Good Players, Exceptional Players

The few articles about playing the blind posting and battles will point you to a single poker maxim: you must be able to find a way to lose LESS when you are posting blinds and a way to gain MORE from opponent’s blinds.  All even the best players in the process would agree that to be able to do so, you must exploit every slight advantage you think you may have against other players and try not to lose too much when things get a little bit unsightly.  Saying it is a world lot easier than doing it; and doing it distinguishes bad players from good players and good players from exceptional ones.

Good players also know that attacking other blinds is not enough to win and to offset the dealer’s rake.  They tend to also minimize their losses while trying to entice other players to do otherwise. Good players tend to bet twice on a hand when it is good and do not think twice to fold when it is not.  Good players do that because they know it’s better to lose $10 or $20 worth of blind bets than lose $40 or $60 on a call or a raise.  Exceptional players, on the other hand, also know the most profitable action for them.  They are able to assess the individual players: the player in the blinds, the player on the button, and the player himself. They know the difference between winning in gambling movies and winning in real poker tables. They know real money in poker is smaller than the pots.  It’s the players “share” in the blinds.
