POKER BETTING LINGO

It’s time to polish your knowledge of poker lingo.  So you just lost a bet to your brother because according to him, you failed to read the signs early in the game.  Good thing the amount involved wasn’t big enough to cause a dent on your pocket but it did put a dent on your ego.  You’re the elder sibling and it probably hurt your pride that your brother could possibly beat you at poker when he would take you to test it.  Are you going to muck it or do you actually know how to bet wisely?

Object of the Game

Poker basically involves rounds of betting starting from the player on the dealer’s left and the betting goes on clock wise around the table.  But you have to bear in mind that your goal when playing poker is to come up with good set of hands when you do get through the rounds of betting.  In Texas holdem tournaments, you would see about 5 rounds of betting where players fold.  When a player folds, that means that this person most likely has a pretty bad hand that has no chance of surviving the next round of betting.  Remember that each player already hast two pocket cards and the flop already showed the community cards on the board.  So, more or less you’d know if you’d be in a better position to just bow out of the game or fold.

Bet, Not Fold

Now, what if you feel you have a good chance of getting a hold of a winning combination?  You are not going to fold.  Instead, you’d either raise or call the bet.  Let’s differentiate those two actions: raise and call a bet.  When it’s your turn, you could match the previous bet by calling it.  Conversationally, increasing the bet would mean raising it.

There are a total of 5 rounds where all players get a chance to call a bet, raise a bet or fold.  Bluffing is another way of forcing another player out of the game but it would be good to do this at a latter part of the game or when you have an idea that you could boot the other player out with your bluff so he would fold.  Besides there’s less of you in the table as each round of betting goes so this increases the chances of you getting a better feel of your opponent’s cards too.  Now see if you could survive the next round.
