POKER GENERALITIES

You would observe a whole gamut of publications on poker and how to play the game, where to play them and more.  More often than not, the information they want to impart are the requisites for a winning game.  They could give you detailed examples of hands you would want to get to win the hand as well as those hands that would spell doom for you.

No Alcohols Please

I would like to touch on the most basic of poker generalities in this article.  Let’s start with avoiding drink while playing.  It is generally understood that alcohol can affect your brain for that night.  Depending on how much you’ve consumed and your tolerance for such, you could either get relaxed after a few glasses or worse, start playing clumsily.  So, most authors would tell you to not do it.

But there are instances when you’d have to down a glass or two when you want to join players to a game of poker.  In which you need to sip slowly to be able to keep your head clear enough to win some hands in the game.  But if you’re the type of player who has trouble controlling alcohol intake, you better start choosing which tables you want to play.  Either be ready to fleece or get fleeced by better drinkers.

Rest Equates to Winners

You can only stay sharp in a game when you’re well rested.  It’s like you just started your first game and you’re very much attuned to your surroundings.  Most pro players will tell you to quit once you start getting woozy and tired.  That absolutely makes sense.  But if you’re one player who still retains your level of play or at least most of it despite getting tired, it might pay to examine other players for signs of flaws.  Should you find them easier to manipulate compared to your level of play, it would spell some more wins for you.

Bankroll Dictates Play

You will get a lot of advise regarding the mathematics of bankroll.  What they basically want to tell you is to play within your bankroll.  Don’t try being a hero thinking that you may win the pot just to get back what you lost earlier.  That is definitely no reason to go beyond your bankroll.  But I could think of a few instances when it might be worth taking the risk.

Look at the players of tables, it might seem that you’re getting nothing from a table with lower stakes because players are too tight and smaller pots are not even working well with your hand.  On the higher stakes tables, you see players you’ve played well before and you’ve beaten them numerous times.  You look at how they play and you get the feeling that this is your kind of table, where your skills would be useful, then try it even if it’s may mean risking a bit more of your bankroll.

There are other factors you need to consider when playing poker.  It’s not just about drinking, getting tired or bankroll at one time.  It’s a combination too with types of plays, your skill set and more.  If you know how to play your cards right, you can get more out of it than what others would normally advise you to avoid.
