POKER PROBABILITIES

Learning Poker Probabilities

What are the odds that you’d get a pair?  Most likely it’s once in 17 chances.  The same odds are possible for your opponents so you wouldn’t want that to get to your head.  With the lowest pair one could get at 2, the closer your hand is to this card, the chances of other players getting a better pair goes higher too.  Learning how poker probabilities work puts you in a better position to make informed decisions when a player calls or raises your bets and the likelihood of another player folding too.

Personal Opinion

Not all poker players are hot on understanding odds.  We all have to accept that not everyone was born a whiz when it comes to mathematics but we can’t seem to get away from this universal truth.  If you’re into poker for the long run, it’s time to learn a few odds that would help you figure better with poker wins.

Basic Odds

In a full table, there’s just one chance of getting starting aces in 221 chances so if you got one, then you know you most probably have the best hand in the lot.  There’s one in 5 odds of starting with either an ace or a pair which is not exactly a good sign because again everyone else around the table got the same chance.  There’s one in 56 chances of starting with a 2 jacks or better.  This again gives you a heads up that you might be better off than the rest once you get a hold of these cards and you are less likely to fold too.

It is easy enough to get suited cards at the onset of the play with one in four chances.  Completing a flush is highly probable with one in three odds.  The same odds are set for turning a flopped set to full house and flopping an ace or king after starting with ace and king.  Don’t get too loose if you start with suited cards because there’s a quarter of the chance you or anyone around the table can get it.

Observe which cards are dealt during flops and turns.  This should help you figure out just how good your opponent’s hands are against yours.  Combine this knowledge with other skills you have polished throughout your continuous play and poker becomes less of a game of luck but more of a match of skills against your opponents.
