Tips in Playing Poker
Poker is popular type of card game where four players bet and try to win the pot (the collection of bets). A poker game is technically won by presenting the highest set of cards as against the other players, or one could bluff the other players to retreat. The hierarchy of the hands (card combinations of the players) would determine the amount that one should bet. A royal flush would surely push one to bet all his chips. Now, the hands are ranked from the Royal Flush to the single High Card. The hierarchy of the cards in the deck is based on their value putting Ace at the top. The suites of the deck, on the other hand, have the same value – no suite is higher than the other.
Game Proper
Poker is basically played to win cash and so much more. So before the game starts, it would be good for the players to set a betting limit. It will serve as a safety net for those players who get too involved in the game that they might start betting properties. To start the game, ante (token bet) is placed in the middle and the dealer distributes the cards to the players. As the game goes one player Open the betting pot by being the first player to bet. The other players might choose to See ( bet the same amount), Raise, (raise amount of bet for others), to Fold or refuse participation in the betting. If no player has moved to Open the betting, one player might opt for a Check. That player doesn’t want to open the betting but still keeps his seat in the game. After each player’s move, they are given the chance to trade three old cards for new ones from the deck and the betting starts again. The player who bets the highest without being challenged or if the rest of the players opted for fold, the game ends and a winner is declared.
Winning the Game
As mentioned before, having the highest hands can win you the game but the probability of constantly having good hands is always low, unless you’re really lucky or you’re a cheater. However, there are other ways to win the game. One of the best rules is to observe your opponents. Try to gauge their hands through their habits, expressions and body language. Some players give in to excitement or the possibility of loss through breathing, muscle control and even impatience. In addition, when a player who never bluffs sets a high bid, that will be the right time to fold. In connection, you should watch your own habit, expression and body language. Appearing calm and in control while playing the game should save you from a lot of losses.
Attempting a bluff, on the other hand, could allow you to take the pot once in a while but never too often. Poker is game of logical guesses and your opponents are not that dumb to fall for your every bluff. If you are employing the bluff technique, try to raise the bet a little higher to scare your opponents away.
Lastly, it’s a-okay to fold. If you’re short of luck and the hands aren’t getting better, fold. Hoping that your hands will get better later on won’t win you a lot of pot. It might deplete your pocket instead. |
