Which of the Six Types of Poker Are You Playing? Playing poker is not only about winning and maintaining your game-plan. Believe it or not, it is also about which particular poker variant you are playing. Note that in poker, there are six prominent types or variants: the Texas Hold’em, the Omaha, the Omaha Hi/Lo, the Seven-Card Stud Poker, the Seven-Card Stud Hi/Lo, and the Five-Card Stud Poker. The Texas Hold’em, no doubt, is the most popular of the six types of poker in the US. It is played in several world tournaments such as the World Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker. Famous poker genius Doyle Brunson even said that Texas Hold’em is the “Cadillac of Poker” since it serves as the major source of income. There are two Ohama poker types, so you must not be confused when it comes to this type. There is the Omaha and the Omaha Hi/Lo. Omaha Poker is just Texas Hold’em with three main differences: the number of pocket or hole cards (Texas Hold’em has two, Omaha has 4), the number of players in a full table, and the rules on board cards (you can’t use all the board cards). The Omaha Hi/Lo Poker is simply a variation of Omaha that allows two winners to split the pot: the one with the high hand and the one with the low hand. The low hand, however, must not have cards higher or better than eight to qualify. In this type of game, moreover, you can choose to make the Ace a high or low card. Furthermore, you may choose to disregard your straight or flush combinations and go for the low hand portion of the pot instead. Then, there are the Seven-Card Stud and the Seven-Card Stud Hi/Lo. The Seven-Card Stud of these last three forms of poker is meant for novices. They are easy to play and master, but can still provide challenge to professional players. On the other hand, the Seven-Card Stud Hi/Lo is just Seven-Card Stud that permits pot splitting between the high-hand winner and the low-hand player. Of all the types of poker, the Five-Card Stud Poker is the least-played or the least popular game, especially online. Only few people still knows how to play this kind of poker game. This is the type where only one card is dealt face down to each player and all the rest of the cards are dealt face up. By the end of the game (if the game is allowed to continue up to the final card or river) each remaining player will have four face-up cards and one hidden card. These five cards will be the basis for determining the winner in the showdown. |
